Short Review
The Nextorch NP11 Ti pen is a neat pen which brings a lot of features to the table. First, it’s titanium! That’s neat. It uses a standard ink cartridge (Schmidt Megaline P950) – that’s appreciated! It offers a tungsten-steel reinforced striking tip, a bolt action, and a MOLLE-compatible pocket clip. Those are interesting features, too! Read on for more thoughts.
Long Review
What’s Included
- Nextorch NP11 Ti pen
- Manual
Package
Packaging is minimal but sufficient.
Build Quality and Disassembly
The Nextorch NP11 Ti pen has a robust build quality. It’s titanium, so extremely strong. It features a peek-a-boo ink cartridge.
Among the features is this “deep carry” MOLLE-compatible pocket clip. The clip also serves as the bolt-action mechanism.
Disassembling the pen is easy – the body unscrews in the middle. Those threads are fairly smooth for titanium!
The ink has a spring, of course.
The threads are very short, which means only a couple or so twists are required to separate the parts. There’s an o-ring there, which is interesting – the pen isn’t otherwise “waterproof” (insomuch as any pen is waterproof, I guess). This o-ring is likely there to improve the user experience (in which case it’s appreciated!)
That spring allows a good bit of travel for the ink.
Size
WEIGHT: 1.2 oz (30% lighter than standard tactical pens)
LENGTH: 5.75 inches (patrol-belt compatible)
Here’s the Nextorch NP11 Ti pen with the venerable Convoy S2+. The version below is a custom laser-engraved Convoy S2+ host by GadgetConnections.com. I did a full post on an engraved orange host right here! Or go straight to GadgetConnections.com to buy your Convoy S2+ now!
In the photo above, you may note that the SRM (standard reference material) for comparison has changed! I used a TorchLAB BOSS 35 for ages. Now what you can see as the 18350 SRM is the Hanko Machine Works Trident. While I have not reviewed or tested the Gunner Grip version seen here, I have tested a Hanko Machine Works Trident Total Tesseract in brass. I love the Trident, and it’s a striking contrast next to the inexpensive Convoy S2+, which also makes a great standard reference material.
Retention
Included on the Nextorch NP11 Ti pen is a screwed-in titanium pocket clip.
It’s a good clip. You can’t see it below, but it just doesn’t touch the pen body (that’s good), and it allows for reasonably deep carry. Also, it doesn’t really get in the way while writing. Note that in the photo below, the tip is retracted. When extended, the pocket clip moves more into the way than seen below.
Lock
The Nextorch NP11 Ti pen uses a bolt action locking mechanism. It works as it should.
I’m not a fan of bolt pens, as I very strongly prefer clickies. But as far as bolts go, this is good. The action is very smooth and easy.
Fidget
The Fidget section is new, just for this pen! There’s a tiny knurled spinner at the top of the Nextorch NP11 Ti pen.
Spinning this little spinner is effortless and possibly even rewarding. The spinner is very silent.
This isn’t the first pen to ever offer a spinning section at the top. The Grimsmo Saga also offers this (I don’t know if it was the first, but it definitely bears mentioning.)
Writing
Writing with the Nextorch NP11 Ti pen is fine. I think this (below) is what most people prefer when writing. A little weight toward the back and a longer pen.
I prefer a shorter pen with the weight fully centered in my hand, so the Nextorch NP11 Ti pen is a little big for me!
The Schmidt Megaline P950 is a perfect fit in the Nextorch NP11 Ti pen.
Since that ink is a standard size, there are a whole bunch of other options you could use in this pen!
Conclusion
What I like
- Solid build quality
- A bunch of features
- Some interesting features (like the spinner)
- Uses a standard ink
What I don’t like
- Fairly costly
- Bolt action (I know people love it! It’s just not my thing)
- “Back” heavy
