BilletSpin Firefly Mini Top Review

I have one last item from BilletSpin for review – kinda disappointed, I have really enjoyed these items!  This is an out-of-production top called the Firefly.  It’s smallish, and great for travel use.

Official Specs

Here’s a link to the official youtube video, since the official page is no more (this top isn’t available now!)

Short Review

Fantastic grip on the stem, and small size make this one a very nice top to travel with.  It’s easy to get great spins out of, too.

Long Review

Package

This top shipped in a BilletSpin pouch, inside a bubble wrap pouch.  In this case, the pouch makes for a good way to carry the Firefly, too – the stem doesn’t get in the way, and the Firefly is very tiny.

Price

Any price you find will be on the secondary market, so and who knows what those could be.

Look

The copy I have here is a very simple top.  I think this is stainless on stainless on stainless – full stainless.  But I don’t have a manual, nor is there a product page for me to confirm that.  At least one part of the Firefly is magnetic, which stainless can sometimes be.  At least two of the parts aren’t magnetic, though, so it’s either titanium or non-ferrous stainless steel.

Per the video linked above, however, there are parts that are likely not stainless.  (I’ll mention now that I don’t get paid by the Stainless Mentions Board™.)  The spin point is tungsten, and the center is probably actually aluminum.  Though my … mass … part is much lighter than the video sample, I think it’s probably tungsten too.  That makes this one of the “super spin” options (newer ones with copper/brass/ti/etc will likely not achieve super long spins).

The stem is short and also narrow, but has a massive amount of grip.

Speaking of the stem, and relevant if you want to try to pick one of these up on secondary:  The stem is directional.  In fact both directions are available, but 90% of what was made intend for clockwise spin.  Ten percent are more ideal for counterclockwise spin.

Feel

As I said above, the stem has great grip.  This is a good top for that reason alone.  Master spinners (of which I am not one), can get 16 minutes out of this top routinely.

This top has a great feel and weight.  There’s a fantastic spin balance, with the heavier edges and bored out center.

Spin Times

An interesting goal with this top for BilletSpin was to massage something their massive userbase calls the Zen Factor Ratio.  BilletSpin wanted a minute for every gram.  This is a 16g top; they wanted 16 minute spins.

The grip helps massively with that.  The excellent balance helps massively with that.  So 16 minute spins are entirely possible.  In fact the owner of BilletSpin thinks someone will get a 20 minute spin out of this top!

I did some spintime tests and the results are as follows:

Spin Time (m:s)
1 (concave glass) 9:23.78
2 (concave glass) 8:45.90
3 (concave glass) 8:32.38
4 (concave glass) 9:07.91

I stopped testing on anything but my concave glass, which is as close to a spin station as I have.  It’s pretty good for it, even if it’s not an official piece.

The contact point for spinning is (per the video) tungsten.

Maintenance / Disassembly

There’s nothing that can be disassembled on The Firefly.  The pieces are press fit together.

Keeping the top clean should provide a long lifetime.

Size

I measure this at 22.94mm in diameter, and 21.67mm in height.  The weight is 19.35g (yes, just under 20g!!)

The Zen Factor Ratio for this specific model of Firefly would hope for 20 minute spins!

Conclusion

What I Like

  • High quality build
  • Amazing spin times
  • Very pocketable, and small
  • Extreme grip for excellent spins

What I Don’t Like

  • Currently unavailable – I’d love to see BilletSpin make this a standard model

I have a few more similar items that I’ll be posting in the coming weeks.  If there’s anything more or specific that you’d like to see, please let me know in the comments!
