Vosteed Hedgehog Top Liner Lock Knife
Here’s the Vosteed Hedgehog top liner lock knife. This is an interesting lock mechanism to go with a beefy knife with a reasonable EDC blade and G10 scales.
Official Specs

Look
When Vosteed asked which Hedgehog I’d like to see, I opted for this “topo-ish” blue version. I have to tell you though that the Micarta versions look incredible. Your experience may vary, and I think G10 is regarded as more durable but… the Micarta looks great!
What I do like about this version is the “brushed” blade. Vosteed calls this “Satin and brushed” but I think that actually means there are two options: Satin and brushed. I would take this as the “brushed” version, as it’s much brighter than the satin option.
Again, the look here is very beefy! The general looks is reminiscent of a Strider knife (like the PT) but the angles are different. They’re just beefy in a similar way.
Open / Close / Lock
The Vosteed Hedgehog top liner lock knife is primarily a flipper. There’s a tab on the back.
The grip area of that tab is very good – very considered. There’s jimping all the way around the curved tab. It provides plenty and proper grip for flipping the heavy blade open!
There’s also a thumbstud, so if you prefer that, or wish to open the blade “less aggressively,” that’s a reasonable option, too.
And here’s the crux of the Vosteed Hedgehog top liner lock knife – it’s right there in the name. “Top liner lock – the knife locks with this top liner lock in a way that I don’t recall seeing before. The mechanism is familiar – a liner lock. But the action is totally different. Instead of pushing the liner to unlock the blade, you push this button which pushes the liner to allow the blade to close.
It works well. One thing I like about this is that it’s very easy to keep all your digits completely out of the way of the blade while unlocking the knife.
Build and Feel
The Vosteed Hedgehog top liner lock knife build quality is fantastic. I don’t have any negatives.
I will say two things I don’t prefer though. First, the G10 seems to have soaked up some of the pivot lubrication and is richer in the pivot area (you can see that most clearly below). You could easily solve this by oiling the whole G10 scales and you’d have a nice even, deep finish scale. But I don’t like to oil things because I inevitably get that oil straight into my eyes (it’s truly a gift.) This is no big deal though!
Next is that when the blade is open fully the flipper tab sits just about 1mm proud from the scales. Again this is a preference thing and probably only matters in review photos. But when you place the knife on a surface (as in the photo below), it can rock a bit and it’s stable. But don’t leave your knives open like this, anyway. (Again, not a negative, just a preference – when open I want this flipper tab to be flush with the scales or below!)
The blade is well centered.
Here’s the pivot end, which has ceramic ball bearings. The action here is very smooth!
The liners are fully metal and have multiple cutouts for weight reduction.
Only one side of the pivot has a TORX – the other is just a post.

Also above is the Vosteed Hedgehog top liner lock knife beside a TorchLAB BOSS 35, an 18350 light. I reviewed the aluminum version of that light in both 35 and 70 formats. I also reviewed that specific edition, the “Oveready BOSS FT Collector Vintage Brass” 35. I love it!
Below is the Vosteed Hedgehog top liner lock knife with the Civivi Elementum. I still use that knife so much!
Steel / Cut / Oats
The steel here is S35VN.
Here’s what everydaycommentary says about S35VN:
Its S35VN steel, which at this point is still a very good steel, but is clearly a cost savings measure.
That was in the context of a much more expensive knife, so I have no issues at all with this knife being S35VN. If S35Vn is a budget steel, it’s reasonable to use it on a “budget” knife.
This is a “modified sheepsfoot” blade. Again I can’t stress how robust this blade feels. Vosteed calls it a ‘1.3″ thick’ blade but they mean edge to spine (not across the spine, of course.) Still, it’s thick! And “modified sheepsfoot” is a great shape for the knife.
Retention
A deep carry pocket clip is installed on the Vosteed Hedgehog top liner lock knife. It’s a nice two-screw clip and allows most of the knife to be in the pocket, with only minimal (8mm or so) over the pocket edge.
The clip is reversible, too – it can go onto the other side of the body. On either side, it allows for only tip-up carry, and can’t go on the other end of the knife.
I appreciate this little blank (below), but more than that, I appreciate that the clip sits into the scales and not onto the scales.
A standard Vosteed nylon pouch is included. The zipper is very forward and to the edge of the pouch. It’s very nice.
Summary and Conclusion
The Vosteed Hedgehog top liner lock knife is a very solid knife. I really appreciate the blade staying under 3″ but the knife does carry big! So it’s a sort of nice mix – you can hit your knife law goals while still carrying something that has weight and heft. The blade shape is fantastic and very capable! It’s worth checking out just to have a look at the “top liner lock” too!
