Vosteed x Reylight Rook Flashlight Introduction

Vosteed x Reylight Rook Flashlight Introduction

Vosteed and Reylight have teamed up to make the Rook flashlight! This light is powered by a 18350 cell and has triple emitters. Read on!

Official Specs and Features

Here’s a link to the Vosteed Rook flashlight Kickstarter page (referral link).

Versions

There are two emitter options right now: Cree XP-L HI and Nichia 519a. Both are reasonable choices for various reasons.

There are also many body colors available. Black, Grey, Blue, Orange, and Red are pictured below.

Price

Depending on the version you pick, your cost will be from $69 to $74. The Cree XP-L HI emitters demand a $5 premium… (But you want the Nichia 519a version anyway, right?)

Short Introduction

Vosteed is a knife maker – in fact, I’ve handled one of their knives before and posted here about it. That’s the Vosteed Nightshade. That knife was exceptionally well-built! But they don’t make flashlights! Enter ReyLight, maker of very popular enthusiast flashlights. I’ve reviewed many of those, (but none recently), and they are quite nice lights!

So a collaboration between Vosteed and Reylight makes good sense! Vosteed brings high-quality build skills and Reylight brings tons of flashlight knowledge. Thus the Rook was born!

What’s Included

At the very least, you’ll get a full package. That’s the light and an 18350. It looks like the included 18350 has built-in charging, too!Vosteed Reylight Rook flashlight included 18350

Build Quality and Disassembly

I want to shine a light on another Reylight, and one that I reviewed many ages ago. It’s the Reylight Gemini. Mine was customized, so didn’t have the user interface from Reylight. But the Rook takes many design cues from the Gemini. They share a pocket clip (many Reylights do, in fact). They share a cell size (18350). The bezel area is also clearly the same.

None of that is bad. In fact, the Gemini is a fantastic flashlight! It’s very likely that the build quality will be similar between the two (and that’s fine.)

Size

Officially 80mm x 25mm, with no weight listed yet.

This is in fact remarkably shorter than the Gemini (which was 97mm).

Retention and Carry

The only means for carrying the Vosteed Reylight Rook flashlight is the already-attached pocket clip. This is a thick clip, held in place by two Hex screws.  The clip is likely stainless. It’s a very nice clip – I like the shape and large mouth.

Many Reylights use this very same clip. The Gemini does, obviously, but the Krystal (my favorite ever Reylight!) does too, as does the Dawn (a light I have never owned, but probably should!)

So this clip has a good history and should be great on the Rook.

Power and Runtime

The rook is powered by a single 18350 cell.

Charging

Included in the package is an 18350 cell with built-in (probably USB-C) charging.

LED and Beam

The Rook uses a triple-emitter setup, and there are two emitter options available. First is Nichia 519a. This should have high CRI output and is around 4000K. The other option is a higher output Cree XP-L HI, at 6000K.

Both include a glow gasket.

They each use a common TIR optic, too, though Vosteed does not state which one is used.

Final Thoughts

I should be able to post a full review of this light fairly soon, but for now, I hope the introduction is useful. I’m interested in this light and not simply because it’s available in orange. Triple emitter 18350 lights are among my favorites, and this one has features that I love! One final feature I’ll mention is tritium slots!

Go check out the Kickstarter and get on the list now! The Kickstarter ends in mid-January, and I believe lights are supposed to start shipping then, too. (referral link)
