Build Quality of the Nitecore NW5000 magnetic powerbank

Nitecore NW5000 magnetic powerbank in hand

Nitecore agreed to send the NW5000 magnetic powerbank. I asked for it mainly because it looks so neat. It also is very neat, which is great. Having never experienced a product like this (which is to say a wireless charging powerbank for phones), I didn’t know what to expect, but I can say I love it.

The build quality is very good. There’s no disassembly here, but the product feels like a LiPO battery with a carbon fiber wrapper. The carbon fiber is fantastic, too – sort of a flake carbon fiber. They call it “forged” carbon fiber.

On the flip side of the carbon fiber parts is a grippier textured surface (which honestly is a magnet for dust). It’s also a magnet for your phone, connecting magnetically for charging.

Size and Comps

Dimensions: 67.2mm x 99.7mm x 10.6mm (2.65″ x 3.93″ x 0.42″)
Weight: 120g±5g (4.23 oz±0.1 oz)

It’s a very slim size, with the most important dimension being the 10.6mm of thickness. Everything else is sort of a “fits on your phone” type size.

Power

The Nitecore NW5000 magnetic powerbank has a built-in 5000mAh LiPO that can charge at 5V, 9V, or 12V.

I do not have any means to test wireless charging, other than to say that it definitely works wirelessly. I even had great success using the Nitecore NW5000 magnetic powerbank with my phone case (also an Apple product with MagSafe). It’s very nice to be able to use this without removing a case! (But sorry, I don’t have any other types of phones to test this on.)

The USB-C charging port can be used for USB-C output, too! So if you need to charge your watch or camera or whatever, this is a good device choice. I tried charging an Apple Watch on the wireless surface (which does work coincidentally on some other wireless devices) but it did not work wirelessly on the Nitecore NW5000 magnetic powerbank. That’s fine – USB-C out and a cable is ok.

Charging

That LiPO is charged via this USB-C port on the base of the device.

Four LEDs describe the current state of charge.

Four constant: 75-100%
Three constant: 50-75%
Two constant: 25-50%
One constant: 3-25%
One flashing: 0-3%

Below you can see four lit in blue. The device is fully charged. The fifth LED is white. This one indicates with three flashes that “wireless charging is available.”

User Interface and Operation

Basically, this is already covered above, but the operation is controlled either automatically or with the e-switch seen below.

Usually, just throwing the Nitecore NW5000 magnetic powerbank on a phone will activate it.

However, pressing the button can do various things. You can double press the switch to activate “low current mode” for charging headphones or smart bands and things like that. Short pressing the button will exit low current mode. Clicking the button once will cause the white LED to blink and alert that wireless charging is now possible.

Summary and Conclusion on the Nitecore NW5000 magnetic powerbank

Having never experienced a wireless powerbank like the Nitecore NW5000 magnetic powerbank, I have to say that I’m a fan. I can see how a few other features might be nice, but I very much appreciate the build quality and carbon fiber of this NW5000. I also like that the USB-C can be used for input and output. I like how easily the device slips into pockets, without adding much bulk.

  • Wireless charging works well
  • Attachment is very firm
  • USB-C port is good for output, too!
  • The use of carbon fiber
