Build Quality and Disassembly

Wurkkos HD02 Mini EDC flashlight

The Wurkkos HD02 Mini EDC flashlight has a perfectly adequate build quality. It’s a very boxy design and fits in with other flat lights.

The tailcap is removable, and since the threads are anodized, loosening it slightly will mechanically lock out the light.

One prominently advertised feature of the Wurkkos HD02 Mini EDC flashlight is this side wing. Wurkkos states that this is high CRI (and we’ll see later if that’s true.)

Size and Comps

82.3mm x 27.2mm x 35.7mm and 112g with cell.

Here’s the light in hand:

Here’s the test light with the venerable Convoy S2+. This is a brass version, which is a good bit heavier than aluminum, but has the same dimensions: 24mm in diameter by 117.5mm in length.

Also in the photo above, my Standard Reference Material (SRM) flashlight is the Hanko Machine Works Trident, an 18350 light. While I have not reviewed or tested the Gunner Grip version seen here, I have tested a Hanko Machine Works Trident Total Tesseract in brass. I love the Trident, and it’s a striking contrast to the inexpensive Convoy S2+, another great SRM.

Retention and Carry

A pocket clip is connected to the Wurkkos HD02 Mini EDC flashlight using two screws.

It’s a two-way clip that allows deep carry.

The tailcap has a magnet strong enough to hold the light in place.

It also has threads suitable for tripod connection.

Power and Runtime

The Wurkkos HD02 Mini EDC flashlight runs a single 14500 lithium-ion cell (included), but it can also run a single AA cell, too!

The cell goes into the light in the usual way. In case you forget, you can look at the little icon (barely visible in the photo below). Positive terminal goes toward the head!

Below are runtime tests on the highest mode for flood, spot, and side white.

Note that the runtime below is just “relative” output so that you can see what the light does electronically. Wurkkos claims 300 lumens for the side light.

The temperature lines in these charts are included as general context, not precise measurements. The values represent the range (min to max) during testing, but should not be taken as exact readings. A temperature sensor is not always attached to the bezel (or even the hottest spot, assuming that could be defined). Even with ideal placement, too many variables affect temperature to definitively state a specific max value.

Charging

The Wurkkos HD02 Mini EDC flashlight has a USB-C charging port on the side. This switch covers the charging port.

Wurkkos includes a C to C charging cable.

This indicator on the side of the wing shows the charge state. I only ever saw it light in green.

Charging using A to C or C to C are both fine, at about 0.9A from the USB source.

Pulse Width Modulation

[data incoming]

Click here to see a “baseline” – a chart with almost no light hitting the sensor.

Then there’s the Ultrafire WF-602C flashlight, which has some of the worst PWM I’ve seen. It’s so bad that I used a post about it to explain PWM! Here are multiple timescales (10ms, 5ms, 2ms, 1ms, 0.5ms, 0.2ms) to make comparing this “worst” PWM light to the test light easier. That post also explains why I didn’t test the WF-602C at the usual 50us scale.

User Interface and Operation

The first thing to mention is the on/off switch that covers the charging port. It’s a sort of soft-lock switch. When “Off” the light just blinks a couple of times to indicate [soft] lock.

Then there’s the ring selector, which can be on Red, Spot, or Flood.

In the middle of the selector is an e-switch with a (probably) metal cover.

The action is good, and the switch is pleasant to use.

Wurkkos HD02 Mini EDC flashlight switch actuation

Here’s a user interface table! The user interface seems to be the same for each of the three items on the selector and, as indicated above, requires that the slider be “ON”.

State Action Result
Off Click On (Output memory)
On Click Off^
Off Hold Moonlight
Any Double click Turbo
Turbo Double Click Moonlight
On Hold Increase brightness (release, then immediately hold again to decrease brightness)
Any (Except wing on) Click 3x Strobe
Strobe Double click Strobe advance (Strobe > SOS > Beacon)

^ Click for off does not work in Turbo and Strobe group. In those two, clicking returns to the previous state, which might not be “off.”

LED and Beam

The spot emitter gets the biggest portion of the TIR. Flood white is on the top below, and red is below.

The wing is very floody too, of course!

LED Color Report (CRI and CCT)

Below you can see the lowest and highest for flood, spot, and wing. The wing is, in fact, high CRI, just as Wurkkos claims!

CCT (Correlated Color Temperature) refers to the measurement of the color appearance of light, expressed in Kelvins (K), which indicates whether the light is warm (yellowish) or cool (bluish). A lower CCT (below 3000K) is considered warm light, while a higher CCT (above 5000K) gives cooler, bluish light.

CRI (Color Rendering Index) is a measure of how accurately a light source renders colors in comparison to natural sunlight. Scored on a scale from 0 to 100, higher CRI values indicate that colors appear more true to life and vibrant, similar to how they would look under the sun.

Beamshots

These beamshots always have the following settings:  f8, ISO100, 0.3s shutter, and manual 5000K exposure. These photos are taken at floor level, and the beam hits the ceiling around 9 feet away.

Tint vs BLF-348 (KillzoneFlashlights.com 219b version) (affiliate link)

I keep the test flashlight on the left and the BLF-348 reference flashlight on the right. These photos are taken around 18 inches from the door.

I compare everything to the KillzoneFlashlights.com 219b BLF-348 because it’s inexpensive and has the best tint!

Summary and Conclusion

The Wurkkos HD02 Mini EDC flashlight has a ton of features! One of the best is that it can run the included 14500 cell as well as 1.5V AA cells! The user interface is fine, but I really do miss stepped or discrete modes. I like that the Wurkkos HD02 Mini EDC flashlight offers a full range of red output (the same as spot/flood) and that the COB emitters are also controlled by the e-switch (and not just on/off!). The price is very reasonable, too!

All my Wurkkos reviews!

^ Measurement disclaimer:  Testing flashlights is my hobby. I use hobbyist-level equipment for testing, including some I made myself. Try not to get buried in the details of manufacturer specifications versus measurements recorded here; A certain amount of difference (say, 10 or 15%) is perfectly reasonable.

What I like

  • Reasonable price
  • Includes cell
  • Full range with red
  • Full range out output with side COB
  • COB is high CRI
  • Can run a 1.5V battery

What I don’t like

  • Tailcap design
  • Questionable exposure of charging port (I can’t see an IPX rating)
